The Dumb War (excerpt)

(SHAWNA begins sneaking around the territory. She searches for her victims and shoots them as she finds them.)

SHAWNA

Who’s this? Do you know this person. Dead. Look at that. And him? Is this someone you recognize? No problem. He’s gone. He’s gone. He’s gone. She’s gone. These kids. Right here. Watch this. Gone. Had to. Had to do it. It’s my fucking duty. As a person who lives somewhere where I hope to one day feel, to have every other Shawna in the world feel like no one can fuck with us, it’s my fucking job. Gone. Another one gone. Shot. Shot. Shot. Shot. Another another another another. Hey. Ina. Hey. Ina. Hey hey hey, can you hear them? Hear it. Hear all of it dying. Everything dying. You know no one here because this isn’t Haiti. This is nowhere you’ve ever been before. This is my fucking bedroom.

(INA breaks free and runs to pick up her rifle.)

(INA shoves the rifle in SHAWNA’s face.)

INA

Smell the gunfire? Fresh from my rifle. I can handle weapons too. I was warned about you. Warned that you have many enemies. And I refused to believe it. The stories were so sad that I thought of course they must not be true. I would not believe you were as much trouble as your dad told me you were but it’s true you never know a storm until you meet it’s eye and you, young girl, are an eyeful of everything I’ve never thought possible in a person.

(SHAWNA runs to pick up her rifle.)

INA

Come back here!

SHAWNA

Not without my fucking ammo.

(They fight in open-fire as bodies around them fall.)

SHAWNA

Watch. Dead bodies, corpses, everywhere, Ina. And it’s all your fault.

INA

It is not my fault that you are angry.

SHAWNA

Yes it is he talks about you all the time I hear your name every day all the time since the day he met you I’ve heard all about how fucking fantastic fantastic great great great you are and it makes me angry Ina you make me angry Ina you have made me angry for a very long time.

(SHAWNA fires over and over and over again. INA fires back.)

INA

I didn’t tell him to talk about me Shawna I didn’t tell him to pay attention to me it is not my fault it is not my fault because you do not need him and so he gave up needing you that is all that is all it is

(INA runs out of ammo. INA retreats to her trench to refuel. Silence. SHAWNA searches for INA. INA sneaks through the terrain, hiding. It is dark and hot. The sound is inescapable.)

INA

Listen. Listen. Listen, this is not my fault. It is your fault. Your fault you are angry.

SHAWNA

Where the fuck are you?

INA

You need to be brave. I do not believe your bravery.

SHAWNA

Shut up!

INA

Strengthen yourself from the inside.

SHAWNA

WHO THE FUCK HAS TIME FOR THAT, GRENADE!

(SHAWNA blindly throws a grenade. INA jumps out of the way.)

INA

AH! Bombs are not negotiations.

SHAWNA

You’re right. Bombs are obvious wins. GRENADE! WIN! GRENADE! WIN! GRENAAAAAAHHHHHHDDEEEGRENADEGRENADEMOREGRENAAAAADESSS

INA

(Overlapping)

GUERRILLA WAARRRFAAREEE!!!

(INA runs at SHAWNA)

SHAWNA

(Overlapping INA’s yelling)

BAAAMANOTHERGRENADE!

(SHAWNA throws a grenade. INA dodges the grenade and jumps on SHAWNA)

SHAWNA

Get off me!

INA

I don’t think so. I think I want to chain you up.

SHAWNA

Get. Off me!

INA

I think I want to burn you with cigarettes and call you bad names.

SHAWNA

GET THE FUCK OFF ME!

INA

No. I want to ride on your back until your spine is useless.

SHAWNA

I can’t breathe.

INA

Start moving.

SHAWNA

I can’t breathe.

INA

Good. You don’t deserve any oxygen. Start moving.

SHAWNA

No.

INA

Move!

(INA tugs at SHAWNA’s hair. SHAWNA crawls through the battlefield.)

INA

Stop here. How does it smell from the floor?

SHAWNA

I can’t—

INA

Do you smell that? SMELL THAT. It will never smell like Haiti in here because it smells too much like angry girl. This is the smell of angry angry girl. The blood and heat and sweat and anger of a girl.

SHAWNA

Ina—

INA

You’re right, this has never been my country. This is worse than my country. Worse than a troubled country is a troubled girl. Move!

SHAWNA

I can’t.

INA

Start moving! This is my mother who I will never see again and this is my father who I will never see again and these are my brothers who were living in my home with my things on the day the world ended. Look!

(INA picks up a severed head.)

See this head? LOOK. SEE THIS PERSON’S HEAD? SEE IT?

SHAWNA

…yes…

INA

One of yours. Your people are dead too. I killed her. You see this girl? I killed her. I killed a girl that looks just like you and I can keep killing girls who look just like you.

(INA picks up her gun and starts firing.)

Watch. Watch this soldier in the distance who also looks just like you who thinks I look just like all of her enemies and who dies today because I decided that it is the last day of her life. Because you made me angry and now I have to kill her. And another. And another. All dead. They are dead. Forever. Because you attacked. Because you attacked and needed to keep attacking.

SHAWNA

You attacked me first you stupid bitch. You fucking invaded.

(SHAWNA throws INA off her back and runs away, shooting at INA.)

SHAWNA

(Overlapping)

Fire fire fire fire fire fire fire FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE

INA

(Overlapping)

I’ll fire back I’ll fire back I’ll fire back I’LL. FIRE. BAAAACCKK.

SHAWNA

YOU CANNOT BEAT ME IN MY OWN ROOM
